What can I expect from China?

China is… a struggle.

don’t take me wrong, it’s AB-SO-LU-TELY awesome!

But it takes one and some.

It’s going to make you run and roll and spin all over the place.

China is not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you enjoy a light tasting Da Hong Pao along the day, then have a sit with me and let’s enjoy some peanuts, or maybe a sweet potato cake together, shall we?

Let’s forget about the Silk Road for a moment and travel back to a time we (and when I say ‘we’ I mean ‘us’ western humans) seem to have forgotten…

China is not a curious and exotic land, a bit less developed than ours, lived by an Asian looking population not as technologically progressed as Japan, nor as iconic as the BTS side of Korea.

Now, now. Don’t ruffle your feathers.

What I just wrote might sound racist and close minded. That’s because it actually is.

Unfortunately, however this is how quite a few people I encountered showed to portrait the People’s Republic of China; a country certainly different from ‘ours’ (always mind the quotation marks) in terms of history, culture and view over the world, full of contradictions (like any other country really), with a big gap amongst the well educated and rich and the less educated and poor members of society (hello? Familiar with that).

But of course, if you’re here to pick inside a rabbit’s Chinese box of memories, you probably are not amongst this group of human.

You’re probably more interested in something else.

Maybe it’s the language; Mandarin is surely a relevant plus when you’re seeking a good job.

Or maybe you’re an Asian fanatic (like myself) and wish to have a closer look to this fascinating, yet controversial culture, of which we only have a blurry image floating in our head.

You might also have just accidentally clicked on the wrong destination and simply got pulled into the rabbit hole.

Maybe it’s Covid and you’re just bored.

Yet here you are. Still reading.

I guess you’re ready to walk into the misty obscurity that leads to the Middle Kingdom (中国, zhōngguó, literal meaning of the Chinese name of China);

a population with over 3000 years of recorded history, starting from the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC)[1], covering 9.706.961 km² of the globe[2], with a number of individuals in 2020 of 1.439.324[3], almost the same number of humans we can find in Europe, North and South of America all put together (1.492.100).

You know, just in case you thought you knew China.
